Phang Nga Bay Yacht Charter — The Ultimate Guide

Why Phang Nga Bay Is a World-Class Yacht Destination

Few cruising grounds anywhere in the world rival Phang Nga Bay. The dramatic limestone karst towers — some rising 300 metres straight from the water — create an otherworldly seascape that has drawn yachtsmen since the region first opened to tourism. A Phang Nga Bay yacht charter offers access to anchorages, caves, and tidal caves that are simply unreachable by any other means of transport.

SLV Marine operates private crewed yacht charters into Phang Nga Bay from Phuket, and this guide covers everything you need to know — from the best anchorages and routes to seasonal conditions and how to arrange a truly private experience.

The Highlights of a Phang Nga Bay Yacht Charter

James Bond Island (Koh Tapu)

The iconic needle-thin limestone tower made famous in The Man with the Golden Gun. Day trip crowds arrive by speed boat between 10am and 3pm; a yacht charter in Phang Nga Bay can reach the island by 7am for a completely private experience, or return after sunset when the crowds have left entirely.

Koh Panyee — The Floating Village

The Muslim fishing village built entirely on stilts over the water is one of Southeast Asia's most photogenic communities. Arriving by private yacht rather than tour boat transforms the experience — anchoring offshore and taking your tender in for breakfast among the morning fish market activity is a world away from the noon tour bus crowds.

Koh Hong and the Hongs

The series of collapsed cave systems — known locally as hongs — hidden within the interior of several Phang Nga limestone islands are accessible by kayak or small tender. A Phang Nga Bay yacht provides the ideal base for exploring these extraordinary formations at your own pace, camping off the bow overnight in complete tranquillity.

Lawa Island

Less visited than the tour boat circuit, Lawa offers excellent snorkelling, clear water, and reliable holding for an overnight anchor. One of the true gems of a Phang Nga Bay voyage.

Best Anchorages in Phang Nga Bay

The bay offers dozens of protected anchorages for yachts drawing less than 3 metres. Key considerations:

  • Tidal range: Phang Nga Bay has a significant tidal range — up to 3.5 metres at springs. Anchoring calculations must account for this; the bay's shallow areas become very shallow at low water.
  • Bottom type: Most bay anchorages offer excellent mud holding. Set the anchor with a reverse thrust test.
  • Current: Tidal currents run strongly through the bay's narrower channels. Time entry and exit to avoid the ebb peak.

Seasons and Conditions

The prime season for a Phang Nga Bay yacht charter runs from November through April — the Andaman's northeast monsoon period brings settled conditions, clear skies, and light winds. May through October sees the southwest monsoon — Phang Nga Bay itself is relatively sheltered during this period and day trips remain possible, but extended overnight cruises are more challenging and require experienced crew.
